4 Myths About Dental Implants You Should Know

When you're deciding whether or not to get dental implants, you may not know what information to believe as you do research. It is important that you have accurate information as you consider getting implants so that you can make a decision based on facts. Here are some myths out that there that you should ignore.

Implants Weaken Your Jawbone

The truth is that dental implants, because they are screwed into your jawbone, are more like your real teeth than bridges, for example, which are attached to other teeth and not your jaw. In fact, dental implants cause bone growth around the implant, strengthening your jaw.

Implants will Fall Out

One of the more troubling myths about dental implants is that they will fall out. However, this is not necessarily the case. Most implants stay in the mouth; in fact, in one study of geriatric patients, implants were successful at least 99% of the time. If you are concerned that your implants will fall out, seek out a dental practice that can provide proof of excellent patient results.

If for some reason an implant does become loose or fall out, it can be removed. A bone graft will be done to ensure that the socket doesn't close, and after some time you will be ready for a replacement implant.

The Procedure is Painful

Some people are reluctant to have dental implants put into their mouths because they think that the procedure is highly uncomfortable. However, there is no evidence that an implant is any more painful than any other dental procedure, as long as your dentist prepares your mouth in the right way. You are likely to be offered a local anesthetic, and in some cases nitrous oxide.

If you think your fear of the procedure will get the better of you, your dentist can prescribe some anti-anxiety medication to help you stay calm. 

Implants Require High Maintenance

Some people imagine that dental implants will take a lot of work to keep clean. However, implants act just as natural teeth do, other than the fact that you cannot get cavities on them. You do have to make sure that the gums around the implant remain healthy, but that is the case for gums surrounding natural teeth as well.
