Getting Used To Invisalign Trays: 3 Tips To Getting Through The Discomfort

Kenzi Thompson

If you've always dreamed of having a straight smile but are put off by metal braces, you'll absolutely love what Invisalign can do for you. Using clear plastic trays, your dentist can correct teeth misalignment in a discreet manner. While Invisalign is generally quite comfortable or more comfortable than other alternatives, getting used to new trays can still be a little bit uncomfortable. If you're having difficulties getting used to your new trays, implement these 3 tips.

Keep the Trays On for as Long as Possible

While this may seem like a bad idea in the beginning, wearing your new trays for as long as possible will help you get used to them faster. You'll feel less discomfort in time. Most dentists recommend wearing the Invisalign trays for 20 to 22 hours each day; however, if you can, keep the trays on for even longer.  It'll help your oral tissues and gums get used to this foreign agent quicker.

Eat Soft Foods

The discomfort that you're feeling may be simply teeth or gum sensitivity. This can happen as your mouth continues to adjust and to adapt to the braces. As the braces reposition your teeth, it may cause your gums to swell or feel sensitive. Avoid further irritating your gums by choosing to eat soft foods, like yogurt, only. You can even try dipping your food in gravy or a clear broth in order to further soften it.

Switch to New Trays Before You Sleep

If the discomfort is primarily coming from the fact that you are switching to a new tray, you can reduce the amount of discomfort that you feel by switching to the new trays right before you sleep. You'll feel minimum discomfort when you doze off. This is also a great time and opportunity for your teeth and gums to get used to the braces without you having to put in conscious effort.

Invisalign trays are usually quite comfortable in comparison to other alternatives. They are not only easy to get used to, but also work in a discreet manner, so that no one will ever know that you are trying to correct your teeth alignment. With that said, some initial discomfort can be expected. Power through the discomfort by implementing the tips mentioned above, and you'll be getting used to the new trays in no time. Your smile will be straight before you know it.
