Tips to Help Get Whiter Teeth at Home

Kenzi Thompson

White teeth aren't that hard to come by. You can opt to have your teeth professionally whitened by your dentist, invest in veneers to cover your teeth, or whiten your teeth at home. There's an option for just about every budget. The best way to get healthy, white teeth is to brush and floss properly, see your dentist for regular visits, eat a proper diet, and drink plenty of water. But for tough stains, use the tips below to whiten your teeth at home.

Start With the Right Materials

That old-school flat toothbrush isn't going to get in between your teeth. Use a toothbrush with multiple bristle layers to get in between teeth and in tough-to-reach areas. Go with a toothbrush with bristles that aren't too soft or hard. Purchase floss sticks to help get in between your teeth and remove food particles easily. Your toothpaste should be ADA approved and contain a tooth whitening formula. If, however, your toothpaste is beginning to make your teeth more sensitive, use a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth.

Watch What You Drink

Tea, coffee, soda, red wind, and similar drinks can stain your teeth. If you can't avoid these drinks, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash after drinking them to help rinse away the staining compounds.

Stop Smoking

The tar in cigarettes can cause stains on your teeth and other unhealthy side effects as well. If you smoke, it's a good idea to quit if you want whiter teeth. Talk to your doctor for help with this if you've tried to quit without success before.

Eat Properly

Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy proteins such as lean meats and fish high in fatty acids. Avoid sugary and acidic foods that can break down the enamel on your teeth and lead to cavities. Also be sure to drink plenty of calcium-rich milk and water to not only keep you hydrated but for healthy teeth and gums as well.

Use Natural Ingredients for Whitening

Combine five activated charcoal caplets, 1 Tbsp. baking soda, and 2 Tbsp. coconut oil in a glass container that can be sealed, then brush a small amount of the mixture on your teeth. Allow it to sit on your teeth for about 5-10 minutes. Then rinse your mouth with water. Use this mixture once or twice per day for a whiter, brighter smile.

See your dentist for regular cleanings, eat properly, drink plenty of water, and brush properly at home in order to get a healthier, whiter smile. Talk to a dentist like Accent On Dentistry - Rowena R Martir DMD about other things you can do to whiten your teeth.
