During dental implant surgery, an anchoring fixture will be placed into your gum line and into the bone of your jaw. Even though the initial implants will be fairly sturdy eventually, immediately after your surgery, you will be required to steer clear of hard or coarse foods that could shift your implants out of place. If one of your implants shifts, it can mean repeat surgery and a longer healing process, so it is crucial that you follow the soft diet plan as closely as possible. Check out this short list of safe foods to eat while on a soft diet after dental implant surgery.
Beans, Peas, and Lentils - Beans, peas, and lentils offer a substantial amount of carbohydrates and nutritive value that you need to not feel hungry on your soft diet. Plus, beans and lentils, when boiled into a soup, are soft enough that they can be mashed without a lot of chewing effort. You can even mash the beans and lentils before you eat them by placing them in a food processor.
Soft Hot and Cold Cereals - Oatmeal, cream of wheat, and other hot cereals are the ideal breakfast food while you are following a soft diet. These foods require very little chewing because the cereal is infiltrated with moisture during the cooking process. If you prefer cold cereal, go for those that readily absorb milk, such as rice cereals. It is a good idea to allow the cold cereal to soak in the milk for a few minutes before you eat it just to eliminate any crunch.
Yogurts, Soft Cheese, and Other Dairy Products - In general, getting your dairy intake every day should be easy even though you are on a soft diet. Yogurt can be an excellent source of dairy and is good for breakfast, a snack, or even mixed with other foods to help make them softer. Soft cheese, such as cottage or ricotta cheese, is also soft enough that it doesn't really have to be chewed. Ice cream, pudding, and other dairy treats are an ideal go-to snack when you want something sweet on your soft diet.
Even though a soft diet can sound intimidating after you have dental implant surgery, there are plenty of foods that you will still be able to consume when prepared properly. Talk openly with your dentist to get a list of even more foods you will be able to consume after your surgery.
