What You Need to Know About Denture Wearing Timetables

Kenzi Thompson

If you need to replace some or all of your teeth, dentures are among the most common options to choose from. Getting used to wearing dentures can take some time. However, they are a quick and fairly easy way to restore your smile to its former glory. When it comes to getting dentures, knowing a timetable for what to expect may be helpful when making your decision. Here are some things you need to know:

What to Expect After the First Day

If you need to have teeth extracted the same day you get your dentures, you can expect to experience some soreness, though it is typically managed with just over-the-counter pain medication. Your dentist will place your dentures after the teeth are extracted. You should not take the dentures out for the first full day so your gums can heal. The dentures protect the gums and help facilitate a clean and healthy environment for proper healing. You should plan to sleep in your dentures for the first night. After the first day, you can begin to take your dentures out each night to give your gums a break. You should plan to eat soft foods at first so your mouth can heal.

What to Expect After the First Few Weeks

After you wear your dentures for a few weeks, you may notice some sore spots in your mouth where the dentures touch. This is normal as your arch and gums get used to the dentures. You may notice you have excess saliva during this time. This is part of the process and completely normal. You may need to go back to the dentist within the first few weeks to have your dentures adjusted if they are uncomfortable or you have difficulty eating.

What to Expect After the First Month

Once you have had dentures for a month, you will notice the sore areas heal and do not return. The amount of saliva produced in your mouth will also decrease. You may notice you have less trouble talking or moving your mouth as you get used to wearing dentures. If you still have difficulty talking or seem to lisp as you speak, practice talking at home when no one is around to help better develop your speech. You may still need to see the dentist for periodic adjustments, but the dentures should begin to feel completely normal at this time. You should be able to eat most food items you like after this point.
