3 Steps To A Dental Cleaning

Kenzi Thompson

You should go see your dentist on a regular basis so that they can clean your teeth and check to make sure that your teeth are healthy. If you haven't gone to your dentist regularly, then you may not be familiar with what the dentist is going to do during a cleaning. So, what is the dentist going to do when they are cleaning your teeth?

Examination

The first step is for the dentist to physically examine your teeth. They are going to count your teeth to make sure that you have as many as you should. The dentist will look at your teeth, use the tool to tap them, and then tell their assistant different numbers and say something about those numbers. The numbers correspond to a particular tooth, and then whatever they say is what they think is going on with that tooth. The dentist is looking for cavities, damaged areas, and build-up.

Removing Build Up

The next part of the cleaning is removing all the plaque and tartar build-up that is on your teeth. Even if you are very careful with brushing and flossing, you are going to have issues with plaque and tartar. It is just a normal part of life. What will happen is that the dentist or their assistant will take a metal tool called a scraper and a small mirror and start to scrape the tartar and plaque off your teeth and away from in between your teeth. The mirror is so the person doing the cleaning can see all aspects of your teeth. There are just parts of your mouth and your teeth that aren't visible without a mirror.

Gritty Toothpaste

After the build-up removal, the assistant or the dentist will haul out the gritty toothpaste. It may not be the nicest toothpaste that you have ever used, but the grit is there for a reason. It is to help clean up any other debris that may still be on your teeth and to give them a little bit of a polish. It's this toothpaste that will have you running your tongue over your teeth for the next couple of days and marveling at how good your teeth feel.

If you haven't been going to the dentist as regularly as you should, then you may be worried about what will happen at a dental cleaning. The process is pretty simple, and it shouldn't hurt you, just makes your teeth feel really good.
