If You Don'T Have To, Why Wait For A Dental Implant?

Kenzi Thompson

Despite doing everything you can to care for your teeth and gums, accidents happen. An accident can result in the immediate loss of a tooth due to blunt force trauma. Alternatively, a sufficiently traumatic accident can afflict the tooth's pulp (its nerve), with the tooth then slowly deteriorating to the point that it must be extracted. The tooth must be replaced, but if you've maintained a high level of oral hygiene, you might be eligible for a same-day dental implant.

Standard Implants

A standard dental implant is called a single-tooth endosteal implant. The actual implant is a small screw made of titanium alloy. It's implanted in your jaw, and once your jaw heals around it, the implant is strong enough to act as an artificial tooth root. The implant's false tooth (made of porcelain) is then secured to the artificial tooth root.

In Stages

This implantation process generally takes place in stages. First, a dentist must confirm that there's enough bone mass to support the implant. If a tooth is lost, the portion of the jaw where it was located tends to lose mass. This might sound concerning, but it's a natural process that happens when the bone no longer has to support the bite force experienced by the tooth. If the bone mass is inadequate, it's replaced with a minor surgical procedure called bone grafting.

Healing Times

After successful bone grafting, in which synthetic or donor bone material is applied to your jaw and allowed to heal, you can receive an implant. Once the implant has healed, its customized, ultra-realistic false tooth can be attached. The average healing time for dental bone grafting is three to nine months. It may take three to eight months for the implant to integrate with your jawbone, after which the prosthetic tooth can be added. Although the ultimate results are worth it, the process can certainly take some months before the new tooth is functional. If you don't have to, why wait?

Immediate Loading

A same-day dental implant is one that can handle immediate loading, with the loading being the bite pressure that the tooth is to experience. This is only possible when teeth, gums, and other oral tissues are healthy, and there are no applicable health concerns that affect bone density or healing. The damaged tooth can be extracted and replaced in the same session, with the bespoke prosthetic tooth being manufactured onsite. It will be an exact replica of the tooth it's intended to replace.

You'll have to be careful with the new tooth at first since its implant still needs to integrate with your jawbone. But healthy teeth (aside from the one that was lost) and healthy gums can mean that you may not have to wait for your dental implant.
